The International Maxi Association mournes the loss of their Vice-President George Andreadis
Athens, 25 June 2023George was a colossus of the sailing world. An Olympic sailor, he represented Greece first in the Flying Dutchman in 1968 and then again in the Soling in 1976. He progressed to larger boats, ultimately maxis, hence his membership of the IMA which progressed to much deeper involvement as Treasurer and Vice President. His boats were named Atalanti or Meliti – and he kept nearly all of them. It was said that he was once beaten by one of his old boats early in his career - and he did not want that to happen again.
He had major success in both World and European Championships run by the Offshore Racing Congress. He was very influential within the ORC having been involved for 40 of its 53 years. He was initially a Congress member, then on the Policy Steering Group and finally the Management Committee.
He capped a very successful racing career with dedicated service to sailing administration where he was involved with multiple national and international organisations including the ORC.
Most important was World Sailing (and he served through all its name changes from IYRU via ISAF to WS). He was on multiple committees including Keelboat and Offshore and ultimately was made a Vice-Preident.
In 2016 he was honoured with its highest award – the Beppe Croce award for an outstanding voluntary contribution to the sport.
He is most remembered for his kindness and generosity and complete dedication to improving all aspects of competitive sailing. Even if he did not agree with you it was always expressed in the gentlest of terms which made his influence all the greater.
Sail on George, you will be much missed and always remembered by the many people who benefited from your knowledge and advice.
Our greatest sympathies to the whole family, especially Anna and Stratis.
